In this article I am going to explain the causes why at times iPhone keeps restarting randomly without any apparent pattern or regularity and how to fix the problem.

The causes of iPad/iPhone keeps restarting issue

The iPad or iPhone keeps restarting issue is not strictly related to a specific model. This issue can occur no matter what iPhone or iPad model you are using. There may be several factors behind this annoying issue such as, updating devices from older to new iOS versions, too many apps running in the background, outdated third-party apps, a software glitch, a hardware issue, just to name a few. iPhone keeps restarting randomly is an issue, which generally falls into two categories:

1. The iPhone restarts intermittently: You use your iPhone for a while without any problem but next moment all of a sudden the phone restarts or shuts down;

2. The iPhone stuck in a restart loop: Your iPhone is stuck in an endless restart loop and it keeps rebooting itself over and over again –never making it past the Apple logo screen;

What to do if my iPhone keeps Restarting itself

If you are wondering why does my iPhone keep restarting itself then you are not the only user facing this problem. Many users encounter this issue occasionally and you need not worry about this. You have to try a few solutions to fix the issue. Here are 9 basic tips which you can try when you find your iPhone keeps restarting indiscriminately, before deciding to visit an Apple service centre:

1. Backup your iPhone

Before you try the fixes for the issue of iPhone keeps restarting by itself, make sure to backup your iPhone so that if something goes wrong due to wrong operation, you can always restore your iPhone to its original working condition. To backup your iPhone,

Go to Settings > iCloud > Backup > choose ‘Backup Now’. If you prefer, you can backup your iPhone to iTunes as well (If you need help to backup your iPhone, you can also visit Apple Support for backup).

2. Update iPhone’s Operating System (iOS)

Older version of iOS may sometimes cause this unexpected behaviour of your device i.e. your iPhone keeps restarting over and over without any apparent pattern or regularity. Therefore, make sure your iPhone has the latest version of iOS. To check if any software updates are available, go to Settings -> General -> Software Update. If there’s an update available, go for installing the latest version. iOS updates always contain lots of fixes for software bugs and other problems. See if updating of the software to the latest version solves the problem of your iPhone’s restarting issue.

3. Force restart your iPhone

Forced restart of your iPhone is the most common answer to iPhone problems following an iOS upgrade. A force-restart of the device cleans all processes, which may help to fix the iPhone keeps restarting issue. In order to force restart your device, just Press and Hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button together for 10 seconds till the Apple Logo Appears on the screen. Release the buttons and let the device start up on its own.

If you are using an iPhone 7, you will need to press the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume down button together till you see the Apple Logo.

4. Uninstall a New App

The iPhone keeps restarting issue could have been caused by a newly downloaded app. If you notice that your restarting problems only started after downloading a certain app you should uninstall the said app, as it could be what is causing the problem of your iPhone.

5. Update Apps

Some of your outdated apps may sometimes be the cause of iPhone keeps restarting problem. Therefore, make sure that all your iOS apps are up to date and see if it solves the restarting issue of your device. To update the apps, simply go to the App Store > Updates > Update All.

6. Reset Your iPhone Settings

It has been observed that resetting your iPhone settings could resolve many software problems and may be the answer to your query ‘why my iphone keeps restarting over and over’. This action restores your iPhone’s settings to factory defaults. However, you won’t lose any of your data or apps due this reset but you may have to re-enter your Wi-Fi password. Therefore, you can try this to see if it solves the restarting issue of your device.

To reset your iPhone settings, go to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings. Enter your pass code if requested.

7. Clean iPhone’s Charging Port

If your iPhone keeps restarting by itself or turning off and on while charging or plugging in a headphone, cleaning the charging port on the bottom of your device may sometimes fix the problem. Take a close look at the Lightning charging port and see if any dirt, dust, or debris is stuck inside the port which would result in bad electrical connection and charging problem. If so, try giving the Lightning port a good cleaning using a toothpick, a bobby pin, a small needle or a can of compressed air. Remember to remove any case before you examine and clean the charging port on your iPhone.

8. Restore your iPhone using iTunes

If all the above fixes failed to remedy your iPhone keeps restarting issue, my next suggestion is to reinstall the iPhone’s iOS and restore your device to factory settings. Restoring your iPhone completely erases and reloads the iPhone’s software (iOS), which can eliminate many software issues including the one that may be causing your iPhone to restart unexpectedly. Your iPhone needs to be connected to a computer to restore your device using iTunes.

You can go for a special type of restore called a DFU Restore, which goes deeper than a regular restore through iTunes and can solve more problems. You can find how to DFU restore your iPhone in one of my articles here.

After the restore process is complete, you’ll be able to reload all your personal information and data from your iPhone backup previously done in iTunes or iCloud.

9. Replace Battery

Defective battery can also be one of the possible causes of ‘iPhone keeps restarting’ issue and replacing the battery is a possible solution in such cases. However, for most users this solution is not a possible one to carry out as they will have to take their iPhone to the Apple service centre to have it done.
