How to get Snapchat for iPad?

iPad users often ask – can you get Snapchat on an iPad to enjoy all its features? My quick answer to this is – yes you can. Today in this post I will show how to get Snapchat for iPad in a few simple steps.

At present Snapchat for iOS is available only for iPhone. Unfortunately, there is no iPad Snapchat currently available in the App Store. However, even though any specific version of Snapchat for iPad is yet to be made available, there’s an easy way to get Snapchat on iPad by which you can still enjoy all the major features of this app. Now, how can you get Snapchat on an iPad?

Before I show how to get iPad Snapchat let me first describe what is Snapchat.

What is Snapchat?

Snapchat is one of the most popular images and multimedia messaging mobile apps used worldwide. One of the principal features of this app is that the messages, pictures, or short videos you send to your friends or family members through this app, are usually available only for a short period before they become inaccessible to their recipients (by default the pictures you send to your Snapchat contacts get disappeared within 10 seconds). As of now, Snapchat has about more than 200 million daily active users globally.

Snapchat is only available for Android and iOS users. However, at present Snapchat for iOS is available only for iPhones. No version of Snapchat for iPad has yet been introduced.

Common keywords associated with Snapchat for iOS

When searching for Snapchat for iOS, users often use a variety of keywords and related terms to find the app or discover similar features. Some of the most popular search terms include:

  • Snapchat app
  • Video chat
  • Save snaps
  • Chat messenger
  • Photo sharing
  • Quick messaging
  • Geofilter
  • Snap save
  • Messenger apps
  • Video snap
  • Free chat apps

These keywords reflect the core functions and features users look for, such as instant photo and video sharing, chat functionality, and fun filters that Snapchat is well known for. So, if you’ve tried searching for any of these terms to find Snapchat on your iPad or iPhone, you’re definitely not alone!

What is the current version of Snapchat for iOS?

For those curious about the technical details, the most recent version of Snapchat for iOS is 9.45.3.0. This version, first released back on July 13, 2011, has seen consistent updates over the years (although this particular version’s update was quite some time ago!). In terms of storage, Snapchat requires approximately 144 MB of space on your device, so it’s a lightweight addition for most iPads and iPhones.

Recent Updates and Features Added to Snapchat

Snapchat has rolled out some exciting updates recently, especially for those hoping for a smoother iPad experience. Now, Snapchat will automatically adjust to fill your entire iPad screen, giving you a much larger view for capturing those fun moments or chatting with friends. This expanded canvas makes it easier to enjoy snaps, see more content at a glance, and keep tabs on more friends when browsing your chats and stories.

However, there are a couple of quirks worth noting: the app currently operates only in portrait mode on iPad, and you might encounter a few minor hiccups here and there with the interface. Despite these small limitations, the core Snapchat experience remains the same—now simply adapted for a bigger screen, making your snaps and stories feel bolder than ever.

So, what’s next? Let’s explore the features you can take advantage of right now when using Snapchat on your iPad.

Now, let’s talk about what you can actually do with Snapchat once you have it on your iPad.

Accessible features of Snapchat on iPad

You may be interested to know what features will be accessible while using Snapchat on your iPad. Even though a version of Snapchat for iPad is yet to be made available, you can enjoy all the major features of this app on your iPad by installing the original version of Snapchat for iOS i.e. Snapchat for iPhone, on your tablet.

Here are the major functions that you can perform from your iPad after you download the Snapchat app on your iPad :

  • Send and receive snaps, messages, and more;
  • Can view snaps that people have sent to you;
  • Share photos and short videos instantly;
  • Save pictures in the gallery;
  • Can fix a time for auto deletion of shared snaps;
  • Add stickers and emoticons;
  • Stay in touch with family and friends with voice and video calls;
  • Add a profile photo;
  • Add extra effects to pictures;
  • Can share snaps with friends using multi-platform devices;

While Snapchat may not be natively designed for iPad, you’ll still enjoy all the core features that make it such a popular app for millions around the world. From capturing candid moments to keeping conversations light and fun with disappearing messages, you’ll find that Snapchat remains the go-to app for quick snaps, sharing memories, and staying connected—even if you’re using it on a larger screen. Many users, myself included, find Snapchat to be an essential way to communicate with friends and family, take great photos, and express themselves through stories, filters, and creative effects.

Because Snapchat was originally launched with smartphones in mind, installing the iOS version on your iPad means you’re technically running the iPhone app. In earlier versions, this led to thick black borders around the app window and a somewhat clunky interface. However, with recent updates, Snapchat now fills your iPad’s full screen, giving you a much larger canvas for taking snaps and making it easier to see more friends on your chat and story tabs. The familiar Snapchat experience is simply bigger and more immersive—perfect for those who like to get creative with their photos and videos.

That said, there are still a few small quirks to be aware of. Snapchat for iPad only works in portrait mode, and the interface can be a bit glitchy at times. Some users may notice that the app doesn’t always feel as smooth as it does on an iPhone, especially when navigating between tabs or using certain effects. Despite these limitations, the overall experience is still fantastic. You can easily send snaps, chat, and keep up with stories, all from the comfort of your iPad.

Although there are a few small limitations—like not being able to like or comment directly on friends’ stories the way you might on other platforms—the overall experience is still fantastic. You can easily send snaps, chat, and keep up with stories, all from the comfort of your iPad. Whether you’re snapping selfies, adding fun stickers, or simply keeping in touch with your closest friends, Snapchat on iPad has you covered.

Common Problems with Snapchat on iPad and iPhone

While Snapchat is a fun and engaging way to stay connected, some users have come across technical hiccups—particularly related to app performance after updates. It’s not uncommon to see users reporting that the app crashes suddenly when attempting to open stories, send snaps, or interact with messages. In many cases, the app may close itself moments after launching, sometimes even before you get to take or view a snap.

Here are some recurring issues users have faced:

  • App Crashing Upon Launch: For certain users, Snapchat shuts down right after opening, or once the camera loads.
  • Glitches After Updates: A number of users have noticed that new app updates can introduce unexpected bugs, leading to more frequent crashes or freezing.
  • Problems Across iOS Versions: Some have found that even after updating to the latest version of iOS, issues may persist, especially on older devices.
  • Troubleshooting Loops: Users often try uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but sometimes this doesn’t resolve the problem—crashes may continue despite several attempts.
  • Impact on Communication: Persistent crashes can interrupt daily communication, causing frustration, especially for those who rely on Snapchat to keep in touch with friends and family, whether they’re in the USA or abroad (like Paris!).

If you encounter these issues, make sure your device is running the latest version of iOS, and consider reaching out to Snapchat support for further troubleshooting steps. This helps ensure you’re getting the most stable experience possible.

Frequently Requested Features and Improvements for Snapchat on iOS

Many Snapchat users on iOS often voice their opinions about features they wish the app would offer or improve. One of the most popular requests by far is the ability to easily access and relive old stories—much like the “memories” feature found in other social or nostalgia-driven apps like Timehop. Users want a convenient way to revisit snaps and stories from previous years, especially on important anniversaries or simply for a trip down memory lane.

There are also calls for smoother syncing of saved stories across devices. For those using Snapchat as their main platform to capture and document everyday moments, seamless access on all their Apple devices is a must-have. Other commonly reported issues (especially after updates) include app crashes or being logged out unexpectedly, with users seeking more stability and reliability so they can stay connected without interruption.

To sum up, the top improvements frequently requested for Snapchat on iOS include:

  • Enhanced ability to browse and relive past stories and snaps;
  • Better synchronization of saved content across devices;
  • Increased app stability, with fewer crashes and login problems;
  • Continued support for creative tools and sharing features so users can enjoy the full Snapchat experience with friends and family.

Snapchat’s core user base remains very active, and with these improvements, the app could become even more enjoyable for everyone.

Alternative and Related Apps to Snapchat

While Snapchat reigns as a favorite for sharing snaps and quick messages, you might also be interested in exploring some other popular apps offering similar features or complementary experiences. Users often mention apps like Timehop, which lets you revisit your favorite memories from years past—a nostalgic twist many wish Snapchat would integrate for saved stories.

Additionally, a range of messaging and video chat apps frequently comes up in user discussions, including:

  • Messenger and WhatsApp: Both provide robust texting, photo, and video sharing, along with voice and video calling.
  • PictoChat and other group chat platforms: These offer fun ways to stay in touch, combine media sharing with easy group conversations, and provide unique sticker or effects options.
  • Photo and video editing apps: Tools like Quik, Clips, and similar apps enable you to create eye-catching short videos or quickly spruce up your photos before sharing them.

So, if you’re looking to enhance your Snapchat experience or want something a little different, these related apps can be great companions for messaging, making quick calls, or reliving special moments.

Popular iPhone-Only Apps: A Brief Look

It’s not uncommon for celebrated apps to debut exclusively on the iPhone, with eager iPad users left waiting on the sidelines. Instagram is a prime example—long regarded as an iPhone-first experience, despite years of requests for a fully optimized iPad version. Snapchat itself followed a similar path, arriving on iPad much later after building a dedicated audience on iPhone.

This trend highlights how some of the most buzzworthy social platforms tend to prioritize the mobile phone experience, often delaying tablet-native versions. So, if you’ve ever wondered why certain apps feel tailor-made for your iPhone but seem awkward or unavailable on your iPad, you’re certainly not alone. These staggered rollouts are a familiar refrain for many in the Apple community.

How to get Snapchat for iPad

Although Snapchat for iOS can work on devices running iOS 5 to the latest version, according to the App Store, this messaging app requires iOS 10 or above to run properly. Therefore, before you go to download the Snapchat app on your iPad, you need to update your iPad to the latest version. There are  two different methods to get iPad Snapchat in a few simple steps and you can go for any one of these,

1. If you are using an iPhone and you have already installed the Snapchat app on your device;

2. If you are not using Snapchat on your iPhone;

Method 1. How to download Snapchat on iPad if the Snapchat app is already installed on your iPhone

If you have the Snapchat app already installed on your iPhone, you can use this previously downloaded app on your iPad for messaging purposes. Now, how can you get Snapchat for iPad using this downloaded app on your iPhone? Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1: Update your iPad to the latest version;

Step 2. Go to the App Store which lists all the apps;

Step 3. Tap the ‘purchased’ button at the bottom and select ‘iPhone only’. This will show up all the previously downloaded apps on your iPhone;

Step 4. Scroll down to the Snapchat app and tap the ‘Get’ button;

Step 5. Now, you will have free Snapchat iOS download on your iPad;

Method 2. How to download Snapchat on iPad if you are not using the app on your iPhone

Step 1: Update your iPad to the latest version;

Step 2: Go to the App Store on your iPad and log in using your Apple ID;

Step 3: Tap the ‘Featured’ tab at the bottom before going to the next step i.e. before going for search;

Step 4: Type ‘Snapchat’ in the search box at the top right corner of the screen. In search results ‘Snapchat app’ will not show up because the App Store recognizes that you’re on an iPad and not on an iPhone. Therefore, you can see apps designed for iPad only;

Step 5:  At the top left, tap where it says ‘iPad only’ and change it to ‘iPhone only’;

Step 6: Now the search results will show up a list of apps that are meant for iPhone only. Nevertheless, those apps run quite well on iPad also with a little lower resolution;

Step 7: The Snapchat app should now show up on the app list. Go over to ‘Snapchat’ and tap the ‘Get’ button to download the Snapchat app free for iPad.

Note: Snapchat will run on your iPad as an enlarged version of the iPhone app. However, there is also a provision to reduce the size of the app;

Common Issues: Fixing Snapchat App Crashes on iPad

If you find that Snapchat keeps crashing on your iPad—especially after a recent update—don’t panic! This is a fairly common glitch, and in most cases, it can be resolved with a couple of simple steps:

  • Update iOS: First, make sure your iPad is running the latest version of iOS. Outdated system software can cause compatibility issues with apps like Snapchat.
  • Restart Your Device: Sometimes, a quick restart can clear up temporary bugs that cause apps to crash.
  • Reinstall Snapchat: If the problem persists, try deleting the Snapchat app from your iPad and reinstalling it from the App Store. This refresh can help resolve lingering software hiccups.
  • Check for Snapchat Updates: Make sure you have the latest version of Snapchat installed, as developers frequently release updates to fix bugs and improve stability.

With these steps, you should be able to enjoy Snapchat’s features on your iPad without further interruptions.

Conclusion

Now that you know how to get iPad Snapchat, let’s see how can you adjust the size of the Snapchat app downloaded on your iPad.

If you want you can reduce the size of the enlarged version of the app, which you will get after you download the Snapchat app on your iPad by using the original version of Snapchat for iOS i.e. Snapchat for iPhone. To reduce the size of the app to the size it appears on iPhone, you are to tap the arrow button in the lower right corner of the screen.

Snapchat being among the world’s fastest-growing companies (recent valuations stand at about $16 billion) it can be reasonably expected that a version of Snapchat for iPad, would eventually be introduced by the developer as this will increase the potential market for the company.

    Since Snapchat is not really designed for iPad, there are bound to be some support issues if the iPhone version is downloaded on it… right? What possible issues do you think could occur?

      Hi David,
      The main issue seems to be the ability of sending snaps to other users. Other users sometimes report that they can’t receive snaps or the app won’t refresh. The problem seems to have become more prevalent as the day has gone on.
