When it comes to life-cycle emissions, not all biomass energy sources are created equal. Certain types of biomass crops—especially those with low yields—can have production and transportation emissions that approach, or in some cases even rival, those produced by traditional fossil fuels. This is due to the fact that growing, harvesting, processing, and shipping biomass materials all require energy, which may come from non-renewable sources if not carefully managed.
